Students at Poyner Elementary and Bunger Middle School in Evansdale were sent home early Wednesday after the smell of gas was reported. Waterloo Schools Superintendent Jared Smith posted on Facebook that because the source of the gas leak was not immediately identified and because the safety of staff and students are of the utmost importance they decided to dismiss the students for the rest of the day. The students were evacuated to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church where parents picked them up.
