A Gilbertville man has been indicted by a federal grand jury after allegedly stealing an ATM in May, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 55 year old John Bennett is accused of stealing a GMC Sierra from a Waterloo home on May 3rd which he then used to steal an ATM from Veridian Credit Union on Brandilynn Boulevard. He also allegedly tried to steal an ATM from Dupaco Credit Union also on Brandilynn Boulevard, but was unable to do so and damaged the machine. He has been charged with one count of Attempted Credit Union Larceny. He was charged on state charges for the alleged crime in May, those have now been dropped in favor of the federal charge. Bennett served federal prison time for committing basically the same crime in 2017. In that case he and a family member not only targetted credit unions but convenience stores as well.
