Glow Stick Dangers

Halloween is one of the most exciting times of year for kids, but it’s also one of the busiest times for the Iowa Statewide Poison Control Center. While brightly colored glowsticks are popular and Registered nurse and poison center educator Joan McVoy says they may look edible to some children, and their teeth can easily pierce through the plastic casing. If this happens, calling the poison control center may save you a trip to the ER. McVoy recommends parents feed their children before taking them trick-or-treating, so they are less tempted to eat their treats before coming home. Glowstick poisoning was responsible for over 300 calls. The Poison Control Center number is 800-222-1222.
