Work has begun on the two-year Iowa Highway 58/Viking Road interchange project in Cedar Falls That intersection is one of the most dangerous in the state, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. The $32 million DOT project plans an underpass that eventually will allow Highway 58 to go underneath Viking Road. The initial work requires lane closures on both Highway 58 and Viking Road to place temporary pavement and temporary traffic signals needed for future traffic shifts necessary for the different stages of construction, according to the DOT. While both Highway 58 and Viking Road are anticipated to be open to at least one lane of travel in each direction throughout construction, the lane closures will result in traffic congestion that will cause backups and delays during peak driving times. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes to avoid the congestion.
