Hudson Teachers in Cancer Cluster Study

A study will begin Monday in Hudson after 12 teachers were diagnosed with breast cancer in less than a decade, according to KWWL. After the recent diagnosis of a young teacher, several others approached Superintendent Dr. Tony Voss about participating in a cancer cluster investigation. Dr. Mary Charlton, Principal Investigator at the Iowa Cancer Registry says it can sometimes be difficult to prove a cancer cluster exists. Women have a 13% chance of developing breast cancer. The study will determine if the stats seen in Hudson are within the expected percentage of the population. Cancer is the number two cause of death in the Cedar Valley, only behind heart disease.
