The City of Denver has released more information about their proposed speed cameras. They say they have heard complaints about vehicles speeding by the golf course and pool, going past the Discoveries Learning Center, on West Fayette Street, by the EMS building, and on Highway 63. A survey in 2023 found that there were 701 vehicles of nearly 15,000 going more than 10mph over the posted speed limit on West Fayette Street. 800 of just more than 9,000 vehicles on East Fayette Street were going more than 10mph over the speed limit. By their own admission the cameras for the survey were poorly placed on Highway 63 and the data may not be indicative of an issue. Despite that, Highway 63 at the C50 Overpass remains a tentative location for speed cameras. They also are proposed to be implemented on West Fayette east of the bridge, East Fayette westbound in the 700 block, and East Fayette eastbound in the 900 block. Those locations could be changed based on electric service and permitting requirements. Tickets would only be issued to vehicles going more than 10mph over the limit and would be between $100 and $400. A private company will monitor the cameras and will send the citations to the police department to then be issued, or not, by the police. The City of Denver would get 70% of the fines. The Denver City Council is expected to vote on the speed cameras at their meeting on May 6th.
