The attorneys for a Waterloo man who escaped from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after suffering a gunshot wound to the head while trying to rob a teenager in August are asking for a mental competency exam, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 28 year old Aundaris Reed was shot while he, and others, tried to rob a teenager selling a stolen gun in August. He would escape from the hospital and remain at large until last month. Investigators, in fact, believed that Reed had died until he made a call to another jailed man charged in the case. Reed’s attorney’s say he has only been partially responsive and does not recognize them. The prosecution says that Reed sounded pretty lucid in that phone call where the two allegedly talk in code about the case. The judge will rule on the request in the near future.
