The Iowa Court of Appeals has upheld the murder of a retired Nashua grocer by a Charles City man in 2012, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Randy Patrie had argued there was not sufficient evidence to convict him of the murder of 70 year old Carl “Ken” Gallmeyer. The court found that not only was the evidence sufficient, it was overwhelming. Patrie heard that Gallmeyer had a safe in his home with a significant amount of money inside. Patrie then broke into Gallmeyer’s home while he was asleep and shot him to death with a sawed-off shotgun. He failed to find the safe, because it did not exist, so he took a number of items including firearms, tools and a TV, which were all later found in Patrie’s possession. At trial, Patrie claimed his uncle had borrowed his vehicle and committed the murder but phone records disputed that claim. Patrie is serving a life sentence.
