An investigation has been launched after a man who led law enforcement on a high speed chase that ended in Bremer County on Sunday died in custody, according to KWWL. Waterloo Police attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by 42 year old Willie Washington just before 7:00 p.m. Sunday but Washington refused to pull over. Instead, he fled the city to the north where the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit. Speeds exceeded 90mph during the chase, which was finally brought to a close with the use of stop sticks at the intersection of Highways 63 and 3 in Bremer County. The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office says they handcuffed Washington, who then became unresponsive. They allegedly performed CPR but it was unsuccessful. An autopsy on Washington’s body will be done today at the State Medical Examiner’s Office. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case and will report their findings to the Bremer County Sheriff’s Office.
