A Waterloo man has been sentenced to prison time after participating in a shooting in which his brother was shot and killed and a woman was injured, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 25 year old Datarius Spates Jr., acting as his own lawyer, accepted a plea deal that saw him sentenced to up to 30 years in prison for charges of Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Intimidation with a Weapon. He must serve 10 years before becoming eligible for parole. Back on July 6th, Spates, his 20 year old brother A’Tarion, and a 15 year old friend were hanging out at a home on Mulberry Street when they became startled by some fireworks. Believing someone was shooting at them, they began firing their own guns at a jeep down the street. The 15 year old accidentally shot A’Tarion Spates in the back with an AR-15, killing him. Datarius Spates was firing a handgun, one of his bullets hit a woman in the ankle near the Jeep. The driver of the jeep was simply pulling up to the home to pick up the woman when they were fired upon. The 15 year old was charged with Manslaughter in juvenile court.
