The Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission has announced that they will begin capturing methane produced by waste and selling it as a renewable energy, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Construction for the project began in June and is expected to be completed by May. Solid Waste Administrator John Foster says the landfill accepts 190,000 tons of waste every year. With the new system more than 3,600 tons of methane will be reduced annually. Foster says they expect to make $70,000 of revenue within the first year of implementation.
