Some fishermen in Waterloo found what turned out to be mortar shells in the Cedar River on Sunday afternoon, according to KWWL. The fishermen called police alerting them to some suspicious objects near the West 6th Street bridge and Railroad bridge downtown. The Waterloo bomb squad was then called in to inspect the scene. They determined that the mortar shells were not explosive and were, indeed, just the shells. The area was soon reopened after it was determined to be safe.
