The DOT approved just 11 speed cameras under a new law while denying 128 others, according to the Gazette. The approved cameras are in just five cities, four each in Cedar Rapids and Davenport, and one each in Des Moines, Marshalltown, and Le Claire. A new state law that went into effect Tuesday says that municipalities must justify their use of automated traffic enforcement cameras. Among the denials, 62 were determined to not be the least restrictive means, 39 were deemed simply not necessary, and 27 were not being used before January 1st of this year. Any municipality looking to use a speed camera after the first cannot be permitted until July of 2026. That would include the proposed speed cameras in Waverly.
Among the area cities denied for cameras were Charles City, Fayette, Fredericksburg, Hudson, Independence, La Porte City, Oelwein, Waterloo, and West Union.
