The new parking kiosks have gone live in downtown Waterloo. Along with the new kiosks, there is also a new parking rate structure and new citation fees. The changes include one free hour for both on-street parking and in the city parking ramps. After that it will be $1 per hour. After four hours the rate rises to $2 per hour. There will be a daily maximum of $6 per day in the parking ramps. Payment can be made at the new kiosks, which have replaced the old school meters. Payments can also be made through a mobile option. Each license plate will receive one warning ticket per fiscal year for its first parking violation. Fines for first time violations will be $15 if paid within 30 days and $20 if paid after 30 days. For vehicles that remain in violation for more than four hours in a single day the fine will be $30 if paid within 30 days and $35 after that. During the first few weeks the ParkWaterloo staff will be focusing on providing support and guidance to parkers rather than enforcement. The City of Waterloo hopes these changes will encourage more people to visit the downtown area.
