A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics says sleeping in the same room as your infant for up to one year may reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.
The AAP points to evidence that shows sleeping in the same room as your infant can reduce the risk of SIDS by as much as 50 percent, but warns against sleeping in the same bed.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, SIDS and other sleep-related deaths account for 3,500 deaths every year in the U.S. The greatest risk is for infants between 1 and 4 months. Experts say you can decrease your child’s risk of SIDS by keeping the room temperature where they sleep between 68 and 72 degrees, having a fan going to increase air flow and breastfeeding — which has shown to reduce the risk of SIDS by 70%.
