New Voter ID Requirement in Iowa

On July first, some changes to Iowa’s election laws begin, and there’s now a new web page to help explain them. Secretary of State Paul Pate announced the new webpage he calls a “one stop shop” to learn about the new Voter ID requirement.

In December, voters who do not have an Iowa drivers license or non-driver’s I-D will get a Voter ID card. Pate’s office believes this will include approximately 85,000 Iowans.

Starting next year, people should start showing it to vote. If people don’t have a Voter ID, Driver’s License, or other ID, they will have to sign an oath attesting they are eligible to vote in that precinct.

Then in 2019, voters will be required to show one of those ID’s to cast a ballot.
