Non-Profit Accused of Illegally Campaigning for New School

A Waterloo non-profit is under investigation for allegedly campaigning for the new high school without filing the proper paperwork to do so, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. The Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board opened the investigation into the Vote Yes initiative run by the Waterloo Schools Foundation on Halloween following a complaint from former Waterloo City Councilmember Margaret Klein. Groups that spend more than $1,000 are required to file disclosure papers by a certain deadline which was not done by the Waterloo Schools Foundation. The foundation produced yard signs and sent out a mass mailing to residents. Foundation Director Hannah Luce says they filed 501(h) paperwork that allows them to participate in the way they did. The measure was comfortably passed on Tuesday, allowing the district to issue $165million in bonds to build a high school to unify East and West High Schools.
