An Oelwein man has been arrested after allegedly punching a baby, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 26 year old Jacob Smith has been charged with one count of willful injury causing serious injury. According to police, a 2 month old baby was taken to MercyOne Medical Center in Waterloo on February 1st where doctors found skull fractures and broken ribs. The baby was then transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City where further tests and treatment found rib fractures in different stages of healing, retinal hemorrhages and bruising. In a March 3rd interview with police, Smith allegedly admitted to dropping the child onto a futon and punching him with a closed fist once on the night of January 31st into February 1st. Smith faces up to 10 years in prison.
