Overturned Conviction Reinstated by Supreme Court

A Waterloo woman who was found guilty at trial of fraudulently claiming a casino jackpot, then had that conviction overturned, has now had the conviction reinstated by the Iowa Supreme Court, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 35 year old Sydney Slaughter was found guilty at trial of claiming a $4,000 jackpot in 2020 for her boyfriend so that the money would not be applied to outstanding fines and child support he had not paid. She appealed the verdict to the Iowa Court of Appeals who, in August, found that the state failed to prove Slaughter did not make the actual winning wager. The state then asked the Iowa Supreme Court to review the case. They decided on Friday that there was sufficient evidence at trial to support the conviction.
