The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for those 12 to 15 years old. The Bremer County Health Department is asking parents to hold off on scheduling vaccine appointments for their children so that two other safety precautions can take place. First the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet today to determine the safety and use of the vaccine for adolescents, then clinical guidance for providers will be finalized. It may take a few days for that to become available to local vaccine providers. At that point, if the vaccine is determined to be safe enough, parents can schedule appointments for their 12-15 year olds. Currently those 16 and older can get the Pfizer vaccine, while those 18 and over can get the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. If you have any questions you are asked to contact the Bremer County Health Department, your healthcare provider, or a pharmacist.
