Police Chief Retiring

Chief Joe Leibold is announcing his retirement from the Waterloo Police Department effective
June 21, 2024.
Leibold, who is in his 34th year with the department, said he has a lot of pride in the City of Waterloo and has
been honored to work with the officers, other city departments and the elected officials in various capacities
over the course of his career.
“Being a police officer has grown me as a person and provided me countless opportunities. I am truly
appreciative of the City and everyone who has played a role in my career and personal development,” said
Leibold.
“Chief Leibold has been an incredible leader for the Waterloo Police Department and has made the City better
under his tenure. Not only do I consider him a great police chief, Joe is also a friend. He will be missed, and we
appreciate his decades of service to our community,” stated Mayor Hart.
Leibold will remain focused on the day-to-day operations of the department until his last day. The City is
considering the best process to search for his replacement, and will announce the plan once decided.
