The prison sentence of a former Iowa business leader convicted of fraud has been commuted by President Donald Trump. Sholom Rubashkin ran the Iowa headquarters of a family business that was the country’s largest kosher meat-processing company. He was convicted in 2009 of financial fraud in the form of submitting fake invoices to make the company’s finances appear healthier than they were. KWWL reports that he was persecuted after federal authorities arrested 389 illegal immigrants from his plant in 2008. President Trump commuted the 27-year prison sentence after multiple members of congress and other high-ranking officials argued Rubashkin’s punishment was too harsh. Rubashkin had served more than eight years in prison.
