According to State Auditor Rob Sand, Nashua may not have owned the dam when they received $50,000 for the dam. There was a change in 1991 that seemingly shifted ownership of the dam and power plant to the City, but Sand says that was never technically finished. That means the City should not have received $50,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act. Sand says the money should be sent back to Chickasaw County if it has not already been spent. Now that the process has been completed and Nashua does own the dam, Chickasaw County could then redistribute the money back to Nashua, making the transaction proper. If the money was spent but was spent on the dam, Nashua would still be in “a pretty good situation,” according to Sand.
