School Settles Age Discrimination Lawsuit

Current Waterloo Schools Superintendent Jared Smith and his former school district, South Tama, have settled an age discrimination lawsuit with three former employees for nearly $1.2 million, according to the Tama-Toledo News Chronicle. Former Activities Director Brent Bagnall was awarded $264,000, former Principal Roy Frakes was awarded nearly $226,000. and former Food Service Director Sandy Jantzen was awarded more than $169,000. The rest of the money went to the legal team representing the former employees. As part of the settlement, those employees are ineligible to be rehired by the district. Bagnall says Smith replaced him with one of his buddies and erroneously claimed Bagnall had violated school policy by racially profiling despite never being written up for any disciplinary reason. Bagnall proved that claim wrong in a hearing for unemployment benefits.
