Sheriff’s Annual Report

The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office has released their 2021 Annual Report, according to KWWL. They saw 816 Class A offenses and 1,051 Class B offenses. Drug violations rose from 295 in 2020 to 494 in 2021. Sheriff Tony Thompson says that is partially due to his deputies working that particular crime harder. OWI’s also rose, going from 214 to 302 last year. Thompson said his deputies were more aggressively going after that issue. Deputies responded to 8,230 calls for service in 2021, up 20% from the year before. Injury traffic accidents went up from 27 to 55 in 2021 and property damage accidents rose from 164 to 199. Jail bookings increased from 4,952 to 5,743. Thompson says the Sheriff’s Office spent most of the year operating with 10% less of its usual staff, something he attributed to the 2020 killing of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis Police Officer.
