South Winn Student Takes Plea Deal

A former South Winneshiek student charged with false imprisonment, assault, and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse has taken a plea deal, according to KWWL. In the plea deal Braxton Smith pleads guilty to encouraging a minor to commit a crime while the other charges are dropped. He will serve 6 months of probation and will also pay the court fees. Smith was one of a handful of people charged in the assault of another student. Former KWWL anchor Amanda Goodman alleged in her blog that many in Calmar and at the school district were actively covering up the crime because Smith was star athlete while at South Winn.
