The Iowa House on Wednesday shot down an effort to ban automated speed cameras across the state, two weeks after the Senate passed a bill to regulate them. The House version of the bill requires communities to justify a need for speed cameras. Republicans pleaded in the House for lawmakers to support a complete ban on traffic cameras, but the amendment was voted down. The House supported a bill that would give the Iowa Department of Transportation authority to regulate the cameras. Each community would have to submit data justifying why the cameras are needed, unless cameras are in high-risk areas such as construction zones or school zones. There are about 80 traffic cameras in eight Iowa communities.
