Sumner Man Charged with Murder

A Sumner man has been charged with murder after he allegedly started a fire that killed a man in August, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 59 year old John Spooner had his bond set at $1 million. Police say they found video evidence of Spooner walking with a gas can to the home of 60 year old Tony Grider. They say Spooner then walked onto the porch and used the gasoline to start a fire. The fire trapped Grider inside and killed him. Spooner allegedly stood and watched the blaze before leaving to discard the gas can. He had been staying at the home at the time. In October Spooner’s attorney filed a notice in the Arson case that he planned to argue Spooner was intoxicated on drugs at the time of the crime.
