On Thursday evening there will be a Sunset Pride Float on the Cedar River in Waverly in celebration of Pride Month. The event calls on those in the LGBTQ community and their allies to hangout, celebrate, and paddle down the river. The float will feature music and snow cones before the parade-style float from the Waverly Area Veteran’s Post to Kohlmann Park. Gathering and registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the floating starting at 7:30 p.m. This is the event that a group of area pastors urged the City not to promote. A similarly sized second group of area pastors condemned the original group’s efforts and motives. Mayor Mark Anderson, a former Lutheran pastor, said that everyone should feel welcomed in Waverly and those that feel like they would be offended by people floating down the river do not need to attend the event.
