Teen Accused of Faking Hostage Situation to Avoid Trouble

A 19 year old from Vinton has been arrested for allegedly making up a hostage situation in Evansdale in response to getting in trouble with his parents, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Dakota Mathews left his parents home on Saturday with friends and failed to return home on Sunday for Easter. His mother had been tracking his whereabouts and noticed he was in Indiana and Illinois. Mathews told his mother he had been robbed, held hostage at gunpoint and his car was stolen. Police found his car at the Kwik Star on West Gilbert Drive in Evansdale. Officers evacuated the store believing there was a hostage situation in progress. Mathews was found hiding in the bathroom. His friends were in the car and told police he made up the whole story after getting in trouble with his parents. Mathews has been charged with False Report to Law Enforcement.
