USS The Sullivans Taking on Water

The USS The Sullivans, named for five brothers from Waterloo, is taking on water on Lake Erie, according to KWWL. The ship began tilting on Thursday. Salvage crews were brought in to pump water out of the ship. They believe the hull may have been punctured. The naval park where the ship resides announced last year that the ship was in danger of sinking. Over $1 million was raised to help save The Sullivans. The ship was named for George, Francis, Joseph, Madison, and Albert Sullivan, who were killed by a Japanese submarine while aboard the USS Juneau in November of 1942. The ship served in World War II and Korea before becoming a training vessel and being decommissioned in January 1965. It was donated to the Naval Park in 1977.
