Vacant Home Fire Led to Evacuation of Apartment

A fire at a vacant home in Waterloo Sunday night led to the evacuation of an apartment building next door, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Passersby noticed flames coming from the home at 725 W. Fifth Street at around 10:30 p.m. Smoke and heat then began to inundate the apartments next door, leading to the evacuation. Waterloo Fire Rescue focused their efforts on containing the fire to the home. Authorities say the home was unoccupied and utilities had previously been shut off pending repairs. The official cause of the fire remains under investigation. No serious injuries were reported.
