Waterloo Man Sentenced on Gun and Drug Charges

A Waterloo man has been sentenced for gun and drug charges, according to KWWL. 26 year old Adrian Zarate was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison after which he must serve a five year term of supervised released. The sentence stems from an incident at a Waterloo hotel in 2018. Someone noticed a sawed off shotgun in Zarate’s vehicle in the parking lot. Police were able to identify the car as belonging to Zarate and went to his room. A search of the room turned up a loaded handgun with a serial number that had been tampered with, shotgun shells, a large knife, and two glass pipes with meth residue. A search of the car found in addition to the sawed off shotgun, an axe, a machete, handgun magazines, and a digital scale with meth residue. Zarate himself tested positive for meth and marijuana. Zarate admitted during his guilty plea to possessing the shotgun which had been illegally sawed off. He will serve his entire sentence due to the federal system having no parole.
