A sophomore at West Central Maynard has died from injuries suffered when the car she was in was struck by a train over the weekend, according to KWWL. 15 year old Kate Michels and her sister were both injured in the collision at the railroad crossing on South Canfield Road in Black Hawk County. Both girls were taken to Allen Hospital initially before Kate was flown to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Kate succumbed to her injuries on Sunday. According to the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, the train’s whistle and railroad crossing flashing lights and bell were working properly. Kate was on the volleyball, basketball, and softball teams at West Central.
