Scholarship in Slain Officer’s Honor

A scholarship has been set up by the family of an Iowa State Patrol trooper who was shot and killed in the line of duty in Grundy Center. The Sgt. James K. Smith Memorial Scholarship will provide a one time benefit of $2,700, representing Smith’s 27 years of service. The scholarship is available to Iowa high school seniors who have a 3.2 grade point average or higher, are a US citizen, and are pursuing a career in law enforcement or have an immediate family member who is, or was, a law enforcement officer. The scholarship also requires the student to be active in a local church. Those who are interested can apply through the memorial website for Smith. Smith was shot and killed by Michael Lang after a chase. Lang has been charged with first degree Murder.
