Family of Man Shot Dead by Police Sues

The family of a man shot dead by Waterloo Police has filed a wrongful death lawsuit, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Brent Boggess led police on a nine minute chase in which he drove through yards and struck a parked vehicle in the early morning hours of November 16th of 2021. Stop sticks were deployed in the alley behind Boggess’ house as he headed that direction. Boggess stopped shy of the stop sticks with a fence on one side of the vehicle, a concrete wall on the other and police behind him. Another police vehicle came down the alley from the other direction in what the lawsuit describes as an aggressive manner. That police vehicle ran over the stop sticks. Boggess, who told police he had mental health issues then pulled forward, colliding with the police vehicle. At that point Officer Kenneth Schaaf fired five shots, striking Boggess. Boggess got out of the vehicle and said, “Dude, I’m unarmed.” He then collapsed and later was pronounced dead. The officers were cleared of criminal wrongdoing. The lawsuit seeks financial support for Boggess’ wife and three minor children.
