Huge Chicken Kill After Facility Closed

The State of Iowa spent $2.3 million to ultimately kill 1.3 million healthy chickens after Pure Prairie Poultry closed its facility in Charles City in October, according to KCRG. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship stepped in to care for the chickens after the Minnesota based company abandoned them. The IDALS failed to receive an offer for the chickens and could not work out a deal to give the chickens away free of charge. After spending $1.7million to care for the chickens they determined it was too expensive and spent a further $500,000 to euthanize the entire flock of healthy chickens. They say the move was done to save taxpayer dollars. The IDALS is looking into ways to recoup the money from the bankrupt Pure Prairie Poultry.
