A Dunkerton man has been sentenced for an armed standoff in May, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Police were called to the home of 74 year old James Parizek on May 18th on a report of a domestic dispute. When officers arrived on scene Parizek threatened to shoot his wife before pointing a gun a law enforcement and later firing his gun inside the home. The standoff closed down a block in Dunkerton for about six hours before Parizek finally surrendered. The retiree apologized in court for his actions that day. His attorney blamed the incident on mental health issues and alcohol. Parizek had been sober for 12 years before beginning to drink again leading to an OWI charge just two months prior to the standoff. The judge granted Parizek a deferred judgment to felony Intimidation With a Weapon and Interference While Armed With a Firearm charges. Those will come off of his record if he completes five years of probation. He was also sentenced to 10 days in jail and two years of probation for a charge of Domestic Abuse by Use of a Weapon. That one will stay on his record and prevent him from possessing firearms in the future.
