Wartburg College will recognize the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States with a panel discussion on the origins and consequences of that day.
“September 11: Reflections on the 25th Anniversary” begins at 3 p.m. Sept. 10 in Whitehouse Business Center 214. Professors Andrew Szarejko, Kunihiko Terasawa and Daniel Walther will offer commentary and take questions. Professor Abbylynn Helgevold will moderate. The event is free and open to the community.
“This is a great opportunity for our students and the broader community to learn more about why the attacks happened and what the consequences were,” said Szarejko, a political science professor. He will share information about terrorism as a political strategy, why the U.S. failed to thwart the attacks and the ramifications for domestic and foreign policy.
Terasawa, a religion professor, will offer his thoughts on the religious dimensions of the attacks, while Walther, a history professor, will provide the historical context on the attacks and the decisions that led up to them.
On Friday, Sept. 11, students will have the opportunity to reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, while packing adult hygiene kits that will be donated to the Waverly-Shell Rock United Way. The American Red Cross blood drive will be set up in the Wartburg Chapel Commons. Appointments are required for the blood drive and can be made at www.wartburg.edu/blood-drive.
Students can also pick up voter registration information, learn more about the 9/11 attacks and take the 11 Ways to Care pledge as part of the college’s “We Care: A Day of Service and Remembrance for 9/11 Day” programming. The programs are funded in part by 9/11 Day, AmeriCorps and the Seed Coalition.
