Tuesday at the Boys State Basketball Tournament on KWAY Country top-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock beat 8-seed Atlantic 58-45 in the Class 3A Quarterfinals. The Go-Hawks were led by 17 points and 9 rebounds from Austin Phyfe, a perfect afternoon at the free throw line as team and a bench that outscored the Trojans 15-0. With the win the Go-Hawks move on to Thursday’s State Semi-Finals to face Cedar Rapids Xavier. Coverage of Thursday’s game begins at 5:30 with tip-off at 6:35 on KWAY Country AM 1470 FM 96.3.
Other scores at the State Tournament were: in Class 2A Pella Christian edged Van Meter 52-49 in overtime, Kuemper Catholic beat Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 51-31; in Class 3A Cedar Rapids Xavier beat Mount Pleasant 59-44, West Delaware got by Dallas Center-Grimes 66-58 and Sergeant Bluff-Luton topped Pella 66-55.
Class 5A action will take place Wednesday in Des Moines.
