Monday was the first day of the Girls State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines. Scores in Class 5A were: Iowa City West edged Waterloo West 65-63, Johnston beat Cedar Falls 71-64, Ankeny Centenial clipped Southeast Polk at the buzzer 47-45 and Waukee hammered Dowling 60-37. In Class 3A: Cherokee beat Davenport Assumption 63-43, West Lyon beat West Burlington 52-30 and Clear Lake ran by Waukon 45-24.
