Drowning Prevention Week Declared

Iowa’s Governor Reynolds declared June 18-24 as Drowning Prevention Week

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 10 people die from drowning each day.

Parents need to make sure children are swimming safely. Drowning is the leading cause of death by unintentional injury between the ages of 1 and 5.

The Iowa Department of Public Health said formal lessons reduces the risk of drowning particularly among young children.

The Iowa Department of Public Health recommended avoiding alcohol while swimming or superivising children, as well as learning both adult and infant CPR.
