The Janesville School District will go back to voters next week to try and pass an ambitious improvement plan on the second try. Last April, voters defeated a bond vote to add four elementary classrooms and a new gym. The bond failed by just 14 votes out of more than 800 cast. Supporters say the need is not just more space but space that meets modern needs. Another big problem is the school’s main gym which falls far short of meeting competitive high school standards. Superintendent B.J. Meaney says the distance from the out of bounds line to the first row of bleacher seats is only three feet. The state athletic union recommends a minimum of 10 feet. Mike Zwanziger, a member of the schools building committee, says the entrance to the gym is so narrow people literally step on the court just to come inside to watch the game.
