Man Sentenced for Killing Blind Man in Crash

A former Waterloo man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for striking and killing a blind man with his car in 2020, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Juan Alejo was a 17 year old West student he unintentionally hit Bob Chambers with his Cadillac ATS. The 67 year old Chambers was returning to the Bridges Senior Living from the store with his Leader Dog, Dayton. Alejo left the scene of the crash. Dayton stayed by Chambers side. Once Alejo was caught, he was deported to Mexico while he awaited trial. He illegally reentered the country, however. He was recaptured and brought back to Black Hawk County to face trial. He received the maximum 10 years in prison for the charge of Homicide by Vehicle. A one year sentence for first offense Operating While Intoxicated was added on as well. Alejo could yet be deported, that is currently being reviewed by federal authorities. Dayton, the guide dog, had to give up his harness after being traumatized by the incident.
