The interim Police Chief in New Hampton has submitted his resignation, just two weeks after being named Interim Police Chief, according to the New Hampton Tribune. Mayor Steve Geerts says that the city knew that Doug Eagan was considering other employment opportunities when he was given the interim police chief role but they did not expect him to resign this soon. Eagan was appointed to the position on April 15th after then Police Chief Tim Pederson kept $40 he found at a self checkout station at a store in Waterloo. When he was contacted by the officer working the case, Pederson returned the cash. The City Council of New Hampton accepted Pederson’s resignation, saying that the Police Chief is held to a standard nobody else would be. A group of citizens have started a petition for Pederson to be reinstated as Police Chief. Eagan’s last day will be May 8th. If Pederson is not reinstated, the New Hampton force will be down to four officers. Officer Chad McGee is expected to be named the new Interim Police Chief.
