New Phone Scam

A new telephone scam is creating problems in Iowa. The scam typically begins with the caller pretending to adjust their headset and asking “Can you hear me?” Jim Hegarty at the Better Business Bureau in Omaha-Council Bluffs says the goal is to record the customer saying “yes”, which they can use to attach to a script of the customer agreeing to purchase a service or a product. This scam is targetted at both consumers and businesses. To be clear, it is a prerecorded message. The best way to handle it, Hegarty says, is to let any unfamiliar caller ID’s go to voice mail, and if you do answer a call asking that question, you should just hang up.
