Cedar Falls Police are urging the public to avoid Highway 58 south of Viking Road due to construction. There has been an increase in accidents while construction continues on the road. Police say that vehicles are entering the area at a high rate of speed leading to rear-end collisions which typically start off a chain reaction and involve several vehicles. Because the traffic pattern is currently head-to-head in the southbound lane and in a high traffic area, it is difficult to then get emergency vehicles on the scene. Vehicles behind the accident are then forced to simply wait until those involved have been removed. Some have argued that there is not enough signage and advanced warning of the construction, also contributing to the amount of crashes. The current traffic pattern is expected to continue until July 15th when it will switch to the northbound lane but will remain one lane, head to head traffic.
