Sisters Found Not-Guilty of Storming Non-Profit

Sisters accused of storming the offices of a Waterloo domestic violence nonprofit after their mother was placed on leave have been acquitted, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 38 year old Latisha Thomas and 33 year old Kaylynn Henderson had been charged with Attempted Burglary. Their mother, Lisa Ambrose, founded Amani in 2014 to help Black survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse. She and the board had been in a dispute when she was placed on leave on May 20th. The board changed the locks on building to keep Ambrose out. The prosecution in the case said that when Henderson and Thomas heard about this they went to the building, assaulted the board member at the door, and illegally entered the building. Thomas and Henderson said that they actually did not know their mother had been placed on leave at that point and happened to be driving by the building when they noticed the board member, a woman they did not recognize at the door. They stopped to investigate. They say the board member pushed them and grabbed their hands when they reached for the door. After deliberating jurors returned not guilty verdicts. Ambrose has since been returned to her Executive Director position.
