Thursday night at the Boys State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines on KWAY Country, Cedar Rapids Xavier beat Waverly-Shell Rock 47-41 in overtime. Neither team shot well as both defenses excelled in regulation as the Go-Hawks and Saints were tied at 38 after 4 quarters. In the final moments of regulation Xavier star Matt Mihms had a free throw that could have sealed the game that he missed and Go-Hawk John Stensland missed a buzzer beater. In overtime the Go-Hawks scored the first three points before Xavier scored nine unanswered to win. Austin Phyfe led the Go-Hawks with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Waverly-Shell Rock will play at noon Saturday in the Consolation Game.
In other Semi-Final action at State: in Class 1A Gladbrook-Reinbeck beat North Linn 58-53 and Grandview Christian topped St. Mary’s Remsen 45-36; in Class 2A Western Christian smashed Camanche 94-44 and Pella Christian edged Kuemper Catholic 64-61; in Class 3A Sergeant Bluff-Luton beat West Delaware 72-59.
Class 5A Semi-Finals are Friday in Des Moines.
