Superintendent Finalists

he Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District School Board has announced three finalists in its search for the district’s next superintendent. The finalists are David Hill, Anthony Ryan, and Jason Wester.

Currently serving as superintendent of the North Tama County CSD, Hill has helped improve the district’s financial position while adding programming and new student opportunities, in addition to leading a successful bond referendum election with 65 percent supermajority voter approval. Hill holds an education specialist degree from Drake University, as well as a PK-12 superintendent certification. Prior to his current role, Hill served as superintendent of the Union CSD.

As superintendent and director of special education in the East Marshall CSD, Ryan has successfully reversed the multi-year downward trend of the district’s unspent authorized carryover budget into a stabilized upward trend. Additionally, he has served on the School Administrators of Iowa’s annual conference professional development planning committee. Ryan holds an education specialist degree from Drake University and a PK-12 superintendent certification. Previously, he served as superintendent of the Centerville CSD.

Wester is the current superintendent of the Tipton CSD. In this position, he has facilitated a district-wide shift in assessment to a standards-referenced framework and led the school improvement advisory committee in developing a Portrait of a TCSD Graduate. Wester holds a doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Western Illinois University. He previously served as elementary principal in the Muscatine CSD.

As a next step, the board and stakeholder interview teams will conduct final interviews with each of the three finalists on Thursday, February 1. The board then plans to discuss the candidates and reach a final decision soon after the formal interviews.

The next superintendent will begin leading the Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District effective July 1, 2024.
